John Hubert Slaney enlisted on the 15th May 1915 at Liverpool in New South Wales. He was employed as a labourer, and had previously for eighteen months as an apprentice with W. J. Clark, auctioneer, of Derby. He stated his next of kin as his mother, Mrs. Emily Slaney, of 1, Church Street, Ossett, Yorkshire.
Five feet four and three quarter inches tall, he had a fair complexion, blue eyes and light hair, and belonged to the Church of England.
